Half-time Check-In on 2020

Near the beginning of the year, I wrote a post outlining my goals for 2020. I’d thought it’d be fun to re-visit that, and just see how I’m doing. Obviously the year has been about the worst version of itself so far, so I’m predicting my actual progress will not line up entirely with where my goals were in January. Let’s take a look…

Get more video content out there.

This is actually going well. I’ve gotten 8 videos out so far this year, the goal was to average one video per month (for the math-averse folks, that’s an average of 1.3 videos/month).  I have my next video planned, and so I should have the ninth out there by the end of July. Video production has not been as smooth as I expected, though, as I took on custom commission work, and didn’t want to slow those build down by adding the element of filming.

To keep this going throughout the year, I’m looking at the projects I have lined up, some custom requests, some my own thoughts/ideas, and some inspired elsewhere, and I am going to plan out more in advance to decide what’s worthy of filming.  The issue I normally have, is I’ll just start a project, with no forethought, and so I don’t even consider getting the camera out to record it.  A little more planning will help that.

Make this website matter.

This, if I had to give myself a grade, it’d be a B-. I started strong, with somewhat regular updates throughout the early portion of the year.  But then that production fell off a cliff.  I can’t really say there was a certain factor that caused it, aside from laziness on my part.

The best way to address this, I think, is to commit to posting once a week. On a certain day. What worries me about this, is that the posts will not have a lot of meaning to them if I’m just posting to check a box.  So if you, dear reader, notice that happening, call me out on it. Help to hold me accountable. I don’t know what day these posts will happen, I may not commit to a day, but maybe just commit to not letting more than 8 days pass without some sort of post/update here. If you check, and I haven’t posted a new article after about 10 days, it may be fair to worry if I’ve been abducted by aliens (it is 2020 after-all, this may not be that far-fetched).

Get an Instructable done.

Done! I have a couple Instructables posted now.  I plan to do more as I knock out more projects, and they’ll probably be copies of posts that show up here as well.

Double sales from in-person vending.

Hahahaha! I think we all know why this isn’t going to happen.  I’ve accepted that I won’t be anywhere close to this goal.  I also have prepared myself to not attend any more in-person sales this year.  Instead, I’m posting up all those items here on my site, over on the Shop page.

I’m also on the board of the River Valley Makers, and our goals have also needed to change this year.  This week we’re hosting an online ‘Home Shopping Network’ style event, River Valley Live, which will essentially be a live-streamed craft show, featuring a slew of local makers, all trying to sell their handmade goods. If that’s something that interests you, be sure to check it out.  The event will be on Facebook, but I’m also going to try and stream it on my YouTube channel.

So that’s it.  So far, so good.  Obviously I’ve failed at updating this website as frequently as I planned.  But it’s been a weird year, so, I can live with that. I hope you’re all staying safe and healthy. Please wear a mask and keep social distancing.

Until next time, use your bear hands for good.
